It has been quite a year for bass music culture in the music and nightlife landscape of Singapore.
In April of 2019, Singaporean crunk-n-bass makers O$P$ released a remix EP of their 2017 track The Answer on Australian label So Solid Records that featured Van Detta, coupled with a visually stunning music video by team member SuperCyberTown. Other news on the music release front include long time stalwart Kiat with the track Stranger Tings on Function Records UK.
Revision Music kept the junglist lighter fuelled with the monthly 170 Lounge series at Ann Siang Hill’s White Label Records in the first half of the year, followed by forays into late night skanking at Intermission Bar. Revision ensured the sound kept pushing decibel meters and culminated in them hosting Metalheadz artistes from the UK – the old school and legendary Digital and the new school rave of DLR of Sofa Sound Bristol – the former appearing at Tuff Club on a Thursday and the latter mashing up the place at Canvas in October on a Saturday night.
Other crews have not been sitting still either. AKA Sounds launched and spearheaded JUKE IT! at Choice Cuts in Katong – a night dedicated to Juke and Footwork, with the welcome inclusion of dancers putting the work into the dance style originating from Chicago and pioneered by Dj Rashad (RIP). A musical and dance culture that is still very new to punters here, this is a vital outlet to find new practitioners of the dance and push the sounds to fresh ears.
All long in 2019, the famed party promoters at Kampong Boogie have ventured in putting on bass music parties as well. Since April of 2019, they have run four shows with low-end vibration as the focal intent to get a dance floor going, plus a collaboration party with Collective Minds with grime-garage UK hero Preditah headlining the night at Tuff Club. All these collectively has sparked off a buzz with dancing Singaporean punters who are generally always up for a party, no matter the genre.
To cap off the year, Kampong Boogie plan to throw one last bass music party for 2019 with a lineup that sums up the depth of a dedicated bass music scene in Singapore.
On the bill for the 30th of November at alternative club venue Somewhere, include AKA Sounds alongside Attagirl! crew members Kinnie and Durio, O$P$ and Revision Music’s jungle music chieftain Senja in a back-to-back set with Dub Skankin’ Hifi regular Submerge.
Kampong Boogie’s resident MC SWTLKR hosts the night, and looking at Kampong Boogie’s track record for pulling in the punters, this special bass edition looks ready to see out the calender for bass music lovers in Singapore – as we propel into the future that is the year 2020.
